To help you make the most of your visit to Cornwall’s characterful seaside town of St Ives, we spoke with Sharon Partridge, Regional Owner Experience Manager at Carbis Bay Holidays, and local expert who knows the area inside out! From where to eat and explore to how to soak up the atmosphere during St Ives Food & Drink Festival, here’s her insider guide to an unforgettable stay.

For someone visiting St Ives for the first time, how would you describe the town?
St Ives is a classic Cornish seaside town with a strong creative edge. Visitors can expect clear blue water, sandy beaches on both sides of the town, narrow streets full of independent shops, and a long‑standing art scene that’s still very much part of everyday life. It’s busy when it needs to be but still relaxed at heart.

What do you think makes St Ives Food & Drink Festival so special?
It’s simple and it suits the town. Great food, local producers, live music and the beach right there. It feels more like a shared celebration than a formal event, which makes it easy to dip in and out of over the days.

What are your top restaurant recommendations in the area?
Porthminster Beach Café for relaxed dining with excellent seafood right on the sand.
Silco for locally sourced Cornish seafood and produce with an Asian and Middle Eastern twist, served as modern small plates. The Rum & Crab Shack for something bold, informal and full of flavour.
Yellow Canary is always worth a stop for coffee and freshly baked pastries.

What’s the best way to explore St Ives and the surrounding coastline?
Definitely on foot! The town is compact and the coastal paths are where St Ives really shines. Walking lets you take in the beaches, headlands and hidden spots you’d miss otherwise.

Beyond food, what should visitors make time for?
Spending time on the beach, even if it’s just sitting and watching the tide. A proper wander around the town, taking in the independent shops, galleries and small bespoke boutiques tucked away on the side streets, as well as a visit to the Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden. These are some of the best ways to experience the creative side of the town and see its character beyond the beaches.

What’s one thing only locals know about visiting St Ives?
Early mornings are the best time to see it. The town feels calmer, the beaches are quieter and the light is beautiful. Also, always keep an eye on tide times, they change the look and feel of every beach.

Are there scenic walks or routes you’d recommend between Carbis Bay and St Ives?
The Southwest Coast Path between Carbis Bay Beach and Porthminster is hard to beat. It’s not a long walk but the views are constant and impressive. Many people walk one way and take the scenic train back.

What kind of accommodation experience can visitors expect with Carbis Bay Holidays?
High‑quality, well‑cared‑for properties in some of the most desirable locations along the St Ives coastline. Each home is thoughtfully presented and comfortable, designed to feel relaxed and welcoming while retaining a sense of understated quality. Many are pet friendly and offer stunning views. Best of all, you can rest assured there’s experienced local support on hand throughout your stay.

Finally, what’s your perfect St Ives day during the festival?
An early walk along the coast, coffee in town, a slow wander through the festival during the afternoon, food straight from the fire, then staying on the beach into the evening as the music plays and the light fades. You could even catch one of the highly impressive masterclasses, but we’d advise pre-booking to avoid disappointment.
